The Golden Globes have ended without a live audience this year. NBC did not move forward with broadcasting the event tonight, following multiple organizations distancing themselves from HFPA. But after another unprecedented year, the awards came back to recognize some of the best works in film in 2021.
Tonight’s biggest awards include Jane Campion winning Best Director in a Motion Picture for The Power of the Dog. The film also won Best Motion Picture Drama. This makes Campion the third woman in history to win a Golden Globes for Best Director.
Other big awards went to Encanto for Best Animated Motion Picture, Rachel Zegler for Best Actress in a Musical Motion Picture in West Side Story, and Andrew Garfield for Best Actor in a Musical Motion Picture in Tick, Tick… Boom! These were the actors’ first-ever Golden Globes awards.
The Power of the Dog and West Side Story were the top contenders for the Golden Globes this year. In total, The Power of the Dog took home Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Best Motion Picture. West Side Story won Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana DeBose, and Best Musical Motion Picture.
Additionally, Kenneth Branagh took home Best Screenplay for Belfast and Will Smith and Nicole Kidman won Best Actor and Best Actress in a Motion Picture for their performances in King Richard and Being the Ricardos, respectively.
