2017 Golden Globes Nominations Announced; ‘La La Land’ and ‘Moonlight’ Lead

Nominations for the 74th Golden Globe Awards were announced early Monday morning. Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes further kick awards season into high gear – it’s time to get serious now. Many of the critic’s darlings – La La LandMoonlightManchester by the Sea – continued to build further awards momentum this morning as all three films picked up nominations in one of the Best Picture categories (the Globes separate dramas from musicals/comedies) as well as earned nods for Best Director, Best Screenplay and mentions for acting.

As with the case with the Globes, the fun (for lack of a better word) comes in the unexpected. Some of the more unpredictable and offbeat choices made this year include seemingly out-of-nowhere mentions for Simon Helberg’s performance in Florence Foster Jenkins, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s work in Nocturnal Animals, Jonah Hill’s nod for War Dogs and, surprise, Mel Gibson’s Best Picture mention for Hacksaw Ridge (which also received mentions in the Best Picture and for Andrew Garfield’s lead performance).

Be sure to check out the full list of Golden Globe TV nominations here. The Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, January 8th with The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon serving as master of ceremonies. As previously announced, Meryl Streep will receive the annual Cecil B. DeMille Award – the actress also picked up a nomination this year for her work in Florence Foster Jenkins.
