2017 Cannes Film Festival Line-Up

The line-up for the 70th Cannes Film Festival has been unveiled, setting the international template for the cinematic year. Cannes president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux made the announcement on Thursday of the official selections, which included 49 movies from 29 countries around the world – notably including 12 films from female directors (3 in competition) and 9 from debut filmmakers.

The competition line-up includes a strong mix of internationally recognized auteurs from around the world and – as per usual – a smattering of new films from Cannes regulars including Hang Sang-Soo (The Day After), Sofia Coppola (The Beguiled), Michael Haneke (Happy End) and Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of Sacred Deer). Todd Haynes also returns to competition with his latest, Wonderstuck, starring Julianne Moore (Haynes was last at Cannes with his 2015 triumph Carol), as will Noah Baumbach, who brings his latest comedy, The Meyerowitz Stories to the fest.

‘Ismael’s Ghosts’

The opening night film will hail from France – Ismael’s Ghosts from Arnaud Desplechin – which stars Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg (a Best Actress winner from the festival for Lars von Trier’s Antichrist). Other notable Cannes items include the world premiere of Bong Joon-Ho’s anticipated Netflix offering Okja (starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton), the Sundance hit Wind River from Taylor Sheridan (screenwriter of Sicario and Hell or High Water), which will screen in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, as well as a special screening of the first two episodes of David Lynch’s upcoming reboot of Twin Peaks.

Nicole Kidman will also be around for the debut of four projects – competition titles The Beguiled and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, the out of competition title How to Talk to Girls at Parties (from director John Cameron Mitchell) and a special screening of the forthcoming limited series Top of the Lake: China Girl.
