Oscar-winner for Joker, Joaquin Phoenix, is in need of a next project, and luckily for fans, he found his next movie role as French conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott directed Kitbag. Apple Studios has secured distribution rights to the film, and production is set to begin in early 2022 in the U.K.
This isn’t the first time that director Scott dabbled in Napoleonic territory before. Scott’s debut film was 1977’s The Duellists, the rival between a Bonapartist and a French soldier.
The writer behind All the Money in the World, David Scarpa, wrote the screenplay for Kitbag.
Scott told Deadline, “Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything — but all the while, he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife, Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her and destroyed himself in the process.”
Scott continued saying, “No actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin. He created one of movie history’s most complex Emperors in Gladiator, and we’ll create another with his Napoleon. It’s a brilliant script written by David Scarpa, and today there’s no better partner than Apple to bring a story like this to a global audience.”
