Taylour Paige, who is set to star in A24’s widely awaited Janicza Bravo-directed feature Zola, has been cast as the female lead alongside Peter Dinklage and Jacob Tremblay in Legendary’s upcoming reboot of Toxic Avenger. Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) is set to direct the reboot. Deadline learned of this news exclusively.

Paige has earned herself rave reviews for her performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, for which she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress. 

The Toxic Avenger is a modern reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s popular low-budget action-comedy hit that came out in 1984. The film is rooted in environmental themes and redefines the superhero genre. The story follows a poor everyman who is pushed into a vat of radioactive waste; he is turned into a mutated freak who must convert from shunned outcast to underdog hero in order to rescue his son, friends, and society from the powers of corruption and greed.

After a successful run as a movie shown in theaters at midnight in New York City, The Toxic Avenger spawned four sequels: The Toxic Avenger Part II, The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. It was also adapted into a musical stage production, a children’s animated TV series, and a Marvel comic.
