Actor/director Zach Braff is set to star alongside actress/activist Gabrielle Union to reimagine the 2003 comedy Cheaper by the Dozen that will premiere on Disney Plus in 2022. Gail Lerner will direct the remake and work with Black-ish creator/executive and producer Kenya Barris, who co-wrote the script and will produce the film. Lerner previously collaborated on Black-ish with Barris. Braff will play the role of the father opposite Union, who will play the mother.
All there is to know about the plot is that it will be based on a multiracial, blended family of 12, juggling hectic home life and handling their family business.
This remake makes it the third installment of the family comedy Cheaper by the Dozen. The first was in 2003, and it is based on the autobiographical book released in 1950 by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and his sister Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. It starred Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt, directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), who will also be an executive producer on the 2022 remake. The sequel Cheaper by the Dozen 2 came out in 2005 had Martin and Hunt reprising their roles, but that film was directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray, 2007).
Braff is best known for playing J.D. on the medical comedy Scrubs that ran for six seasons. His directorial debut came in 2004 with Garden State, in which he also wrote and starred alongside Natalie Portman.
