Last July, Marvel announced they had plans to work on new incarnation of the extraordinary comic book character “Ghost Rider.” Throughout his five-decade history, Ghost Rider has gone through many iterations, but the conceit has remained the same: a harbinger of justice, with a flaming skull head, who usually rides a motorcycle. Actor Nicolas Cage gave the world its first live-action performance of the character in 2007’s Ghost Rider, and subsequently returned for the 2012 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Now, Cage is publicly supporting fellow actor Ryan Gosling in his taking on the fiery role, proclaiming to The Hollywood Reporter:
Ryan’s going to do his thing with it and I’m looking forward to seeing it. Ryan knows how I feel about him as an actor; we’ve had nice conversations and we stay in touch. I was happy for him and wished him best of luck on his adventures and I look forward to seeing the movie.
When the project was announced at Comic Con, Gosling himself stated, “This is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time.” With him on stage was the upcoming film’s director Shawn Levy, who oversaw Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which reportedly made over a billion dollars worldwide. Levy and Gosling have worked together already on a new Star Wars film that is set to release May 28th, 2027, entitled Star Wars: Starfighter. Their prospective Ghost Rider is planned to release the following year on July 28th.
