20th Century Fox, who owns the Marvel Comics characters from the X-Men and Fantastic Four canon will not give up the rights back to Marvel, at least not any time soon. For, now that division will be kept from any of those characters appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety that there will be no partnering with Fox as Sony did for their Marvel hallmark, Spider-Man (the upcoming reboot of Spidey – featuring Tom Holland – will formally be part of the MCU; Holland debuted his take take on the character in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War).
The official response from Fiege is “It’s an impossibility at this juncture. We certainly have enough films to keep us busy for a number of lifetimes.”
Instead, Fox is interested in rebooting the X-Men Universe (again) as well as building upon the Deadpool franchise. In addition, they have said they have New Mutants project alongside the long-gestating Gambit project which has been highly anticipated for a while now. Lastly, they also have a rumored X-Force project waiting in the wings. However, both studios have made previous deals such as with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Fox was allowed to make changes to Negasonic Teenage Warhead for Deadpool, as long as Marvel could get the rights to EGO the living planet.
The silver lining for comic book movie fans is that both arms of the Marvel film division have plenty of product to keep them afloat for years to come.
