A second outing for Edge of Tomorrow (or Live Die Repeat or whatever moniker it may be going by these days) may be getting the green light. Deadline was the first to report that scribes Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have been hired to pen sequel for the well-regarded 2014 science fiction film. Tom Cruise and a robust Emily Blunt headlined the first film, a slow burn at the box office that eventually turned a profit thanks to solid word of mouth and a strong take at the international box office.
Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) directed the first film and appears attached for a second go while original writer Christopher McQuarrie will serve as producer and may aid in developing the script. The unusual structure and somewhat tidy finale for the first Edge of Tomorrow will require some invention, especially if Cruise and Blunt return. Cruise, however, hasn’t been resistant to franchises in recent years as his long-running Mission: Impossible series continues onward (it started in 1996) and second Jack Reacher film is on arrival – Cruise is currently filming a reboot of The Mummy for Universal.
Shrapnel and Waterhouse, however, are quickly becoming forces in their own right. Both jointly penned the Halle Berry-headlined drama Frankie & Alice (a somewhat forgotten drama that earned Berry a Golden Globe nomination in 2011) and recently wrote the Jesse Owens bio Race. They also paired up for rewrite of McQuarrie’s upcoming thriller The Gray Man which has Charlize Theron attached to headline.
We shall stay tuned for further developments on the sequel for Edge of Tomorrow. It may be some time before things get started considering Liman has a fairly heavy schedule upon him – he recently filmed the thriller Mena (also starring Cruise), is attached to direct the drama The Wall and is likely helming the upcoming Gambit starring Channing Tatum.
