20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the new science fiction adventure The Martian starring Matt Damon (Elysium) and an impressive ensemble cast. The movie is based on the 2014 novel by Andy Weir and follows astronaut Mark Watney (Damon), who was thought to have died in a sandstorm while on a mission at his crew’s outpost on the planet Mars. Watney instead survives and sends a message to NASA, having to then grow enough food to survive the wait for a rescue crew to arrive.
The loaded cast includes Jessica Chastain (Interstellar), Kate Mara (Fantastic Four), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Jeff Daniels (Looper), Sean Bean (Jupiter Ascending), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Donald Glover (The Lazarus Effect), Mackenzie Davis (That Awkward Moment), and Michael Peña (Fury). Fox previously released a handful of stills from the movie highlighting the cast, particularly Damon, as he traverses the martian landscape.
It will be interesting to see how audiences respond to the movie as last year’s Interstellar drew plenty of attention from audiences, though it was equally criticized as it was popular. Ridley Scott is also in need of a hit, as his previous two movies – Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Counselor – failed to find much traction with audiences.
Like Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic, The Martian will be released in IMAX and 3D formats November 25. You can watch the trailer below.
