San Diego Comic Con’s epic line up of trailers continue with arguably one of the most anticipated, and most skeptical, films of the year. With the success of Wonder Woman offering hope to those put off by Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad, all eyes turn to Justice League as the DCEU’s do or die moment. To succeed, it needs to balance the arrival of three new characters alongside Wonder Woman and Batman, give them reason to unite against a common foe, and make the build-up feel worthwhile while not too overstuffed on content. So, how does the four minute long trailer play out?
Taking place some time after Superman’s death at the hands of DCEU Doomsday, the world remains in mourning. However, a new threat emerges across the world in the form of Steppenwolf, who seeks to unleash the armies of Apocalypse upon Earth. Now, in order to defeat this threat, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) must locate and work alongside three other heroes- Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and the Flash (Ezra Miller)- in order to stand up to this evil.
Currently Justice League is experiencing post production reshoots overseen by Joss Whedon, who took over after Zack Snyder stepped down in the wake of his daughter’s death this past March. The film that we see in the trailer definitely has a more colorful and action driven setting, with a couple moments of good humor sprinkled throughout. This could be a sign that DC and Warner Bros. have taken criticism of their franchise to heart, or a case of Whedon’s involvement in recent months. At the same time, there’s no way to tell whether all these character introductions will hinder the film’s storytelling, nor place Justice League on the same level of Marvel Studio’s The Avengers. Until the reviews come in, all we can do is hope that DC can snag another win for critics, audiences and comic book fans.
Justice League will be released in theaters on November 17th.
