Warner Bros. confirmed the re-release of Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight trilogy in Hong Kong and Taiwan cinemas including Imax in June, which would be ahead of the filmmaker’s latest epic launch of Tenet set on July 17.
For a limited time, fans of the Batman features can enjoy themselves with the classic reruns as their theaters are cautiously reopening up to the public after the enforced coronavirus lockdown.
The three films include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises and will release over several weeks. The first release will be in Taiwan starting on May 29. In Hong Kong, cinemas re-opened two weekends ago, so Batman Begins will begin to play on June 4, followed by The Dark Knight on June 11 and The Dark Knight Rises on June 18.
The Dark Knight trilogy re-release is consistent with Warner Bros’ plans to bring back a number of large titles around the world as international cinemas ease into operations. For example, the studio had set plans for Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone to return to the market in China once movie theaters re-open. The studio also released a 4k remastered version of The Matrix in Hong Kong earlier this month.
Nolan’s highly anticipated, expensive thriller Tenet is currently waiting on the domestic July 17 release date. Nolan has stated that he is a huge advocate of the theatrical experience, so there is hope that he will be the one to bring the film onto the big box office once cinemas return to normalcy.
The Dark Knight trilogy has grossed $2.46B worldwide since 2005 (unadjusted), and the series has continued to grow in Hong Kong and Taiwan. 2005’s Batman Begins did $1.8M in Hong Kong, then in 2008, The Dark Knight grossed $7.55M, with 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises topping it off with $10.35M.
