Warner Bros (Possibly) Developing ‘Space Jam 2’

Yesterday Deadline reported that Warner Bros had planned sequel for Space Jam in development produced by Charlie Ebersol, written by Willie Ebersol, the sons of NBA broadcaster Dick Ebersol, and starring LeBron James. Unfortunately, sources close to James denied later denied his involvement or any knowledge of Space Jam 2.

We could possibly still see Space Jam 2 with a different basketball star,  or maybe James will reconsider after the reaction to the Deadline story, or the whole thing could be a hoax and Warner Bros had no plans to begin with.

1996’s Space Jam starred Hall of Fame basketball player Michael Jordan as himself along with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the rest of the Looney Tunes. The story, inspired by Jordan’s real-life decision to step away from basketball to try baseball in 1993, had the Looney Tunes recruit Jordan to help them win a basketball game against aliens, who stole talent from other NBA All-Stars including Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing.

As a four time MVP and two time Olympic Gold Medalist, LeBron James seems the obvious choice to step into Jordan’s role for Space Jam 2. The question of who else could appear instead will likely inspire many a lively debate on NBA forums everywhere. Something else to consider though, Space Jam (1996) introduced Bugs Bunny’s girlfriend Lola Bunny. Lola’s characterization has since changed dramatically on The Looney Tunes Show where she is voiced by Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig. While the rumored title is Space Jam 2, would it really be a direct sequel to an almost 20 year old movie, or would it reflect the changes to the characters since then? Hopefully these are questions worth asking and Warner Bros will continue(?) production of Space Jam 2.
