‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ Will Surpass ‘Black Widow’ at 2021 Domestic Box Office

Upon release, Venom: Let There Be Carnage broke the biggest premiere record since the beginning of the pandemic, when it grossed $90.1 million in its opening weekend, surpassing the $80.8 million that Black Widow made at the time. Three weeks in, the Sony superhero movie has amassed over $182 million domestic and, at the pace it is performing, it could easily surpass the Marvel picture’s total earnings.

The first Venom hauled in $213 million domestic in 2018. If it equaled or exceeded that figure, Venom: Let There Be Carnage would beat Black Widow and its $183 million by far. The Scarlett Johansson summer blockbuster is the second highest-grossing movie of 2021, after another Marvel title: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, with a total of $221 million.

In addition to this, the Venom sequel has marked the second-best October release of all time, behind Joker and its $96.2 million. It is also worth noting that Venom: Let There Be Carnage exceeded the figure set by the first installment in October 2018, making a $80.2 million debut.

“For us, Venom: Let There Be Carnage absolutely validates our exclusive theatrical window strategy,” said Sony president Josh Greenstein via Deadline after the opening weekend data was released. Considering how badly Warner had been doing with its simultaneous release policy, which they are now regretting, it’s not hard to agree with him.
