Based on the book by Philip Reeve, Mortal Engines looks similar in style to the movies in the Lord of The Rings or The Hobbit trilogies. Of course, there’s a good reason for this, as the director helming this Universal blockbuster is Christian Rivers, who worked as a storyboard artist for director Peter Jackson on the aforementioned Middle-earth sagas. Jackson also serves as a producer, and one of the screenwriters, on the film.
The film, which is set to come out in theaters on December 14, 2018, centers around mobile cities that are trying to survive after a “sixty minute war” has desolated Earth. The cities, which vary in size, move around on giant wheels and devour smaller towns in an effort to replenish their resources.
Starring Lord of The Rings‘ Hugo Weaving, as well as The Expanse‘s Frankie Adams and Avatar’s Stephen Lang, the first full trailer is below for your viewing pleasure.
