It’s less then a week after the Academy Awards and Saoirse Ronan is already busy with her next film(s). This time she is returning to her period drama roots with an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s stage classic, The Seagull.
Ronan will be playing the pretty ingenue Nina along side American Beauty star Annette Bening who is playing the fading actress Irina Arkadina. Also, House of Cards star Corey Stoll will portray the famous writer Boris Trigorin, Dunkirk‘s Billy Howle will be the lovesick Konstantin and The Handmaids Tale‘s Elisabeth Moss will play his admirer, Masha.
This makes the third film adaptation of The Seagull, which was originally written in 1895 as the Russian playwright’s first of four major plays. It has been adapted into several ballets, operas and two film adaptations including one directed by Sidney Lumet.
Directed by Broadway director Michael Mayer, who took the adaptation from a script by Tony winning playwright Stephen Karam, the film will follow the romantic and personal conflicts of a dynamic cast of characters, featuring multiple love triangles and a play within a play.
It’s set to be released to theaters on May 11.
