New Line Cinema has come up with a new fright film to scare the goosebumps off your skin. The trailer for the film inspired by a Mexican fable, The Curse of La Llorona, captures the lore of The Weeping Woman. Her sad tale of drowning her own children and then being doomed to search for them for all eternity is the muse for writers Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis creation.
Urban legends, tall tales, and folk lore have been around since humans could talk. Stories about ghosts and ghouls not only provided entertainment, but also a sense of danger and warning for all ages. While the fable of The Weeping Woman has been around for generations to scare children from staying out too late, New Line has rediscovered why the legend is only a folktale…to some.
In the trailer, a social worker and mother of two (Linda Cardellini) gets wrapped up in the fable. After visiting the crime scene where two children have been murdered, her own children (Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen and Aiden Lewandowski) have a late night run-in with the spirit. The mother soon comes to believe that her only hope to survive the ghost is with the help of a priest (Raymond Cruz) who seems to know more than he’s letting on.
Making his directorial debut, Michael Chaves is joined by producers of the successful Conjuring franchise, James Wan and Gary Dauberman. Chaves is set to direct the future Conjuring 3 sequel while Dauberman is slated to direct the upcoming untitled Annabelle 3 sequel. The Curse of La Llorona is set to hit theaters on April 19, 2019.
