Tom Holland recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly and discussed a plethora of subjects surrounding the upcoming Sony film Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the interview he discusses Alfred Molina, working with other cast members, and his overall future with the character of Spider-Man.
On working with veteran actor Alfred Molina, Holland mentions the change in technology over the last twenty years, “When he was making these films, the arms were puppets, and when we did it, they’re all imaginary and CG. It was quite cool to see him relive it, but also relearn it.” While Molina is confirmed due to the trailer, it will be interesting to see if the still unconfirmed castings by Marvel will see all three Spider-Men come together in this film. Whether that be a shot in the second trailer or when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters December 17,2021.
Overall, it seems as if Holland is having a great time working with legacy actors, his current cast members, and director Jon Watts. Holland mentions that the actor and director were up and coming when this started with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, but now years later they have grown significantly due to the franchise. Holland is set for Uncharted, while Watts is in line to direct The Fantastic Four reboot.
“We were all treating [Spider-Man:No Way Home] as the end of a franchise. ” And he says, “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [Spider-Man: No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
It is refreshing to hear that an MCU movie feels like the end, as typically the blockbusters films seem like they could go on forever. However, even if that might go on, it does not necessarily mean that the actors, directors, and characters will. People move on, but the things they create stay. Holland seems to know this.
This sounds like the end of an era for Holland, and he even mentions that further with discussing his co-stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, Holland saying, “We’ve had such an amazing relationship, the three of us… We’ve done every single film, every single press tour.” Adding that one of the last scenes they shot “was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers. So sharing that moment with them was maybe the best day I’ve ever had on set. I don’t think I’ve cried like that ever.”
It is wonderful to hear that Holland is taking these moments and holding on to them. If Chadwick Boseman taught us anything, it is to hold on to every moment because life is truly unknown. Holland’s talked about in the past how he wants to take a break, but this feels more like an end of a chapter for the young web-slinger, at least for now.
