Get ready for another sweet adventure with the iconic fictional inventor and chocolate maker, Willy Wonka, who will be played by none other than Timothee Chalamet. Warner Bros. and Roald Dahl Story Co. have begun work on a film about young Willy Wonka and his adventures before opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory, Deadline has reported today.
Paul King is directing the film from the screenplay he wrote alongside Simon Farnaby. This is the third film centering on Willy Wonka, the first, which released in 1971, starred Gene Wilder, and the followup/remake from 2005 starred Johnny Depp. This will mark the first take on the character without Charlie Bucket as the film’s central character. According to sources, the film will also give Chalamet the chance to show off his singing and dancing skills in several musical numbers.
Chalamet has been a favorite to take on the role of Wonka for quite some time but had to push the part back due to scheduling issues. The actor was busy starring in Denis Villeneuve‘s upcoming adaptation of Dune and Wes Anderson‘s next film, The French Dispatch. Chalamet is also set to play a part in Adam McKay‘s upcoming Netflix film, Don’t Look Up, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
