Iconic film and television director Alan Taylor is on board to direct Gold Mountain, which tells the story of a widow and young girl who must work together in spite of their distrust during the 1850’s San Francisco Gold Rush. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is a U.S. and China venture with actress Michelle Yeoh in talks to star and produce alongside Jane Wu and Brandan Dennehy. The project was formally announced by Taylor at a discussion panel held at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig will be penning the film’s script. Taylor and Wu confirmed that they conducted extensive research through historical documents about the Gold Rush, which led them to this “special story about two individuals caught up in a world-transforming historical time.”
Gold Mountain will be handled by Starlight Culture Entertainment Group, which has worked on Chinese and American films including upcoming projects with Roland Emmerich, James Wan and Jon M. Chu. The company previously banked on Crazy Rich Asians last year and agreed on a multi-picture deal with one of its stars, Henry Golding.
Taylor is widely known for his directorial work in The Sopranos, Mad Men and Game of Thrones. His film credits include Thor: The Dark World and Terminator Genisys.
