The Weinstein Company has picked up North American distribution rights for the satire Army of One, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film, which is still in pre-production, will star Nicolas Cage and will be based on the true story of a Colorado construction worker who tried to hunt down Osama Bin Laden.
The film will be directed by Larry Charles, who is best known for directing Sacha Baron Cohen’s film efforts – Borat (2006), Bruno (2009), and The Dictator (2012) – as well as the Bill Maher documentary, Religulous (2008). Charles’ latest will have a similarly subversive tone.
Cage has starred in a wide range of roles, including last year’s widely-panned Left Behind and the critically successful but hardly-seen indie Joe. Like much of his recent roles, both of those were serious. The comedic tone in Army of One should give him a chance to flex his comedic muscles, as he famously did in the Coen brothers’ Raising Arizona (1987).
No release date has been announced for Army of One, though it’s set to start filming in March.
