The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially entered the “billion-dollar club.” Over this past weekend, the film finally reached $1 billion worldwide. This weekend’s box office put the film at $428.5 million domestically and $571.5 million internationally, for a worldwide total of a clean $1 billion. This makes the film the first theatrical film release of 2026 to gross $1 billion worldwide. The Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, is close to being the second, with a current worldwide total of approximately $888 million.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s total is less than that of its predecessor, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film grossed $575 million domestically and $785 million internationally, for a worldwide gross of about $1.3 billion. Together, the two films have grossed approximately $2.3 billion worldwide, making them the 9th-highest-grossing animated movie franchises.
This total puts the two animated Mario movies just below Pixar’s Inside Out (which has grossed $2.56 billion over two films) and DreamWorks franchise Kung Fu Panda ($2.37 billion over four films), and Madagascar ($2.26 billion over four films). Currently, the highest-grossing animated film franchise is fellow Illumination franchise Despicable Me, which has grossed $5.64 billion worldwide across six films.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently available to rent or buy on most digital platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. It is slated for a release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 16.
