‘The Nun 2’ Takes Home The Gold At Weekend Domestic Box Office With $31.3 Million – UPDATE

The newest entry in the ongoing Conjuring series has jumped up to the top of the box office list for the weekend. The Nun 2 is projected to pull in $31.3 million this weekend domestically, dethroning Equalizer 3 from last weekend.

The ninth film in the series, The Nun 2 stars Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene, with Bonnie Aarons playing the Nun herself. The director for the newest installment has worked on the series in the past, helming previous films The Curse Of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. Included in its estimated gross is $3.1 million in preview showings from 3,728 locations.

As Variety states, The Nun 2 is on track to land somewhere within the middle, as far as grossing for The Conjuring series goes. The predecessor to this installment remains likely the best performing of the franchise, with a $53.8 million opening weekend, and pulling in a global total of $365.5 million.

It’s a bit of a dip from the records of the original film, but just enough to butt out Equalizer 3. Taking in $3.4 million on Friday, it’s estimated to gain $11.6 million this weekend. So far, it’s been able to generate $59 million, opening last weekend with $42.3 million, gaining the second biggest Memorial Day debut in history.

Coming in third place is another third outing, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, in its premier weekend. It took in $3.7 million on Friday, aiming for a moderate $9.5 million gross for the whole weekend.

Hindi action film Jawan is pulling up fourth, with $1.7 million for its opening day. It’s estimated to land $5.5 million this weekend. Star of recently released Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan, headlines in the movie, with a dual-role as father and son.

Rounding out the top 5, and needing no introduction, is Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. In a 45% drop from last Friday, the film made $1.38 million this Friday, and is estimated to earn $4.9 million this weekend. It recently overtook Super Mario Bros. to become the highest grossing of film the year, with a $1.38 billion total.
