The Lowdown on ‘The King’s Man’ New Trailer

The third movie in the Kingsman film trilogy is on the horizon, and this week an electric new trailer dropped. The trailer was teased on the movie’s official Twitter account the day before, in true secret agent fashion, in a coded message. In the teaser, the “Duke of Oxford” produces a scrambled recording, urging his “associates” to decrypt the message. Fans quickly realized that the recording said, if played backward, “Watch the brand new trailer for The King’s Man tomorrow.” A visual message with the same secret message accompanied the teaser, with the tagline, “We are oxfords, not rogues,” a take on the franchise’s catchphrase, “Oxfords, not brogues.”

The trailer itself, set to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” confirms that The King’s Man serves as a prequel to the first two Kingsman films. Whereas the first two movies take place in modern day England, The King’s Man is a period piece taking place in the World War II era, serving as an origin story for the secret Kingsman organization. The Duke of Oxford (played by Ralph Fiennes) introduces young Conrad (Harris Dickinson) to the team of Polly (Gemma Arterton) and Shola (Djimon Hounsou) who make up the independent intelligence agency that assists the Allies in the war effort. Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Lee Unwin, another newcomer to the agency that is an ancestor of Eggsy, from the first two films. From this trailer we also get a closer look at one of the villains, Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), with Daniel Bruhl’s currently unnamed character lurking at his side.

The King’s Man is currently projected to be released on September 18, 2020. Just like its predecessors, the film is being directed by Matthew Vaughn.
