The Future is ‘Bright’ for Will Smith in Teaser for Upcoming Netflix Original

“I’m assuming this doesn’t end well.”

During last night’s 89th Annual Academy Awards broadcast, Netflix dropped the first teaser trailer for their upcoming original feature film, Bright.

Reuniting Oscar nominee Will Smith (Collateral Beauty, Concussion) and director David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch), Bright is a classically high-concept cop film that is set in an alternate Los Angeles that combines our modern world with a Tolkienesque fantasy realm of magic and monsters.

An LAPD cop, played by Smith, is teamed up with an unlikely partner in an orc cop, played by Joel Edgerton (The Gift, Exodus: Gods and Kings). Together, they must fight off various unsavory crooks and creatures, and work out their differences as they protect an elf, played my Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Prometheus), and a powerful doom-bringing magic wand.

Together, Smith and Ayer are no strangers to high-concept fantasy and buddy-style cop films. Between them, they have credits such as Suicide Squad, Training Day, Bad Boys, and Wild Wild West. The film is written by Max Landis (Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein), who has also been around the park of high concept features.

Bright is set to be released on Netflix in December 2017.

Austin Allison: Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, I have been obsessed with cartoons, animation, and film in general for as long as I've known how to talk and draw. From Disney animation to indie movies, filmmaking was always the purest form of art to me. I majored in Film and Television Studies and minored in Studio Art at the University of Arizona. The greatest aspect of studying film was developing a creative and critical eye for a medium that I had loved for so long, but couldn't explain why I loved it until now.
