Warner Bros has hired Ben Wheatley, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s big hit Rebecca, to direct The Meg 2, returning the 80-foot prehistoric shark to the big screen.
It has been two years since The Meg arrived in theaters bringing in a whopping $530 million worldwide. The first film was about a monstrous megalodon emerging from the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world’s oceans in the Pacific.
Jason Statham, the actor behind the movies Hobbs and Shaw and Expendables, is expected to reprise his role as a U.S. Navy diver sent to rescue other divers from a shark attack. Statham is well equipped to handle deep diving as he was a world-class diver on the British Commonwealth team before becoming an actor.
Jon Turteltaub directed The Meg based on a book called Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten in 1997. Ruby Rose (Batwoman), Rainn Wilson (The Office), and Li Bingbing (Transformers: Age of Extinction) also starred.
Wheatley is a British filmmaker that made himself known as the director for the dark and satirically skewed. Before working on Rebecca, Wheatley and Armie Hammer worked together on an action-comedy Free Fire that starred Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins).
