Orphaned by Relativity Media, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, The Bronze has now been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. The raunchy comedy premiered as the opening night title at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Relativity won the ensuing bidding war. Amid financial woes, the company returned the film to its producers.
Melissa Rauch (from TV’s The Big Bang Theory), who co-wrote with husband Winston, stars in Bryan Buckley’ s feature film debut about a former Olympic gymnast who resorts to sabotage when she faces being toppled from her celebrity perch by a younger new gymnast in town (played by Haley Lu Richardson). Festival reviews were less than enthusiastic, and the film picked up a reputation for its foul-mouthed coarseness and lewd content.
Buckley, a prolific TV commercial director, was an Oscar nominee for his 2012 live action short, Asad. Gary Cole (Cotton) co-stars, along with Thomas Middleditch (The Wolf of Wall Street), Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and Cecily Strong (TV’s Saturday Night Live).
Duplass Brothers Productions and Stephanie Langhoff are producers on the project. Sony Pictures Classics has yet to name a release date.
