The Academy Breaks Silence After Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock at the Oscars

As one of the four biggest award shows in entertainment, it’s hard to think of anyone who wasn’t watching the Oscars last night. During what is the grandest night in film, one would think that the day after viewers would be talking about the fashion or maybe how this year some of the craft awards were prerecorded, but this is not the case this year. Even those who weren’t watching know all about how Will Smith charged up on stage and slapped Chris Rock live on the air, after Rock took a cheap shot at Jada Pinkett Smith’s buzzed hairstyle.

“Keep my wife’s name out of your f******* mouth!” Smith screamed at the stage once he returned to his seat, before Rock swiftly and coolly returned to the script. And then not even an hour later, Smith took home Best Actor for his work in King Richard.

Deadline discloses that last night shortly after the show that The Academy took to their Twitter account to make a comment on the events that took place:

People everywhere are leaving their opinions on Smith’s actions, but The Academy is now also under fire for not taking action against Smith and letting him walk home with one of the most coveted awards of the evening. Nevertheless, 2022 will go down in Oscar history as another notable night that took an unexpected turn of events.
