Tenzing, a new drama film about the first trek to summit Mount Everest, will debut at the Zurich International Film Festival this year. The film is based on a true story and stars Genden Phuntsok, who plays Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese-Indian Sherpa and skilled mountain climber. He is joined by Edmund Hillary (Hiddleston), who helps him become the first person to summit the world’s tallest mountain. Willem Dafoe plays Colonel John Hunt, the leader of the British exhibition team.
The film is directed by Jennifer Peedom, who has directed a number of mountain climbing documentaries in the past. It is an Apple TV original film. The film will serve as the opening of the Zurich Film Festival. Christian Jungen, CEO of the festival, said, “This year’s ZFF motto is ‘dream big.’ Our breathtaking opening film Tenzing fits perfectly, because it shows how you can grow beyond yourself when you have a big dream. The film offers powerful emotion and mountain scenery of sublime beauty. But it also carries an important message for our time: The first ascent of Mount Everest only succeeded because the climbers respected the local Sherpa people and the laws of nature.”
Tenzing officially debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 15, but Zurich will serve as its European debut on September 24. Jennifer Peedom, Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe will present the film in Zurich. Tenzing has a limited theatrical release on October 9 before hitting Apple TV+ on October 16.
