HBO Max announced on Twitter yesterday that Christopher Nolan’s time-bending espionage thriller, Tenet would be hitting the platform May 1. The film released in theaters in the middle of the pandemic before Warner Bros decided their future titles would hit the streamer the same day as they release in theaters.
Nolan previously frowned on the Studio’s decision when it was made late last year, calling it a “real bait and switch.”
“It’s sort of not how you treat filmmakers and stars and people who… have given a lot for these projects,” said Nolan in an online interview with Entertainment Tonight.
The director’s eleventh film was expected to be one of the biggest events of the summer until the pandemic caused issues for the entire industry. It struggled to sell tickets domestically but still made a healthy $363 million worldwide. The film only just recently became available in several New York City theaters when they were finally allowed to re-open.
Tenet stars John David Washington as secret agent who’s tasked with preventing World War III using time travel. He stars alongside Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Kenneth Branagh and Clémence Poésy. The film was recently nominated for two Academy Awards for visual effects and production design.
