Sundance Announces Changes for 2023 Festival

The Sundance Institute has announced some updates ahead of their coveted Sundance Film Festival next January, returning for the first time since the pandemic.

The Festival will be taking place in person at the Sundance Resort as well as in Park City and Salt Lake City, spanning from January 19-29. The Festival will also be accommodating high demand for attendance with an online curated program that will begin on January 24.

This online program, known as New Frontier, will be available worldwide with a focus on independent artistic practice and environmental engagement within art, film, and new media technology.

The Festival will be screening feature films, short films, and episodic projects as well as pictures from every competition title: U.S. Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, World Cinema Documentary, and NEXT.

The last two days of the festival will be used to show the winning films as usual, but this year they will also be shown online as well as in person.

Joana Vicente, CEO of the Sundance Institute, shares the organization’s excitement for the Festival’s return. Vicente voiced that the team behind Sundance curated this year’s Festival with the ideas of  tradition, accessibility, and expanding opportunities in mind specifically.

The Sundance Institute is mandating its employees to wear masks for the event and asks its guests to comply with this wish as well. An encouragement to test and be up to date with vaccinations has also been vocalized by the nonprofit.

Submissions for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival are currently open.
