Steven Soderbergh Wrote a ‘Sex, Lies and Videotape’ Sequel During Lockdown, Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo to Reprise Original Roles

Steven Soderbergh might just be the busiest director in Hollywood. He recently just released his HBO Max film Let Them All Talk, which stars Meryl Streep and Lucas Hedges, and he’s also in post-production on his new crime-thriller, No Sudden Move, which stars Noah Jupe, Brendan Fraser, Matt Damon and Jon Hamm. In addition to the new films, the director revealed in recent interview with The Daily Beast that he’s been re-editing some of his earlier films and plans on creating a box set featuring seven of his older releases. And now, we know that, during lockdown, Soderbergh somehow found time to write a sequel for his 1989 feature debut, Sex, Lies and Videotape.

Sex, Lies and Videotape, premiered at the 1989 Sundance Film Festival where it won the audience award. The film went on to win the Palme d’Or and FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes Film Festival, and even received an Oscar nomination for its script. Now, about three decades later, Soderbergh is returning to the film that put him on the map. So far, stars Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo have agreed to reprise their roles from the original.

“When I thought about Sex, Lies and Videotape, I realized that what I wanted to see is a movie about the two sisters 30 years later,” said Soderbergh in an interview with Filmmaker Magazine. “One of them has had a child who is about the same age that she was in the original. Both Andie and Laura have agreed to come on.”

No further details about the proposed sequel were revealed. Luckily, with the director’s recent output and some big upcoming projects, Soderbergh fans have a lot to look forward to.
