After another quiet weekend at the U.S. box office, The Croods: A New Age came out on top yet again. The film generated $3M over the last weekend, bringing its total U.S. gross to $24.1M. Globally, the film has earned a total of $76.3M.
Because of an unprecedented deal that gives Universal Pictures the ability to put new releases on demand within weeks of premiering theatrically, the studio has been much more willing to release smaller-scale movies during the pandemic. Universal, and its specialty label Focus Features, have been dominating the U.S. charts as a result of this deal. Currently, three out of the top five highest grossing movies this weekend belong to the studio.
Focus Features’ comedic drama Half Brothers earned the second place spot this weekend, earning $490,000 and bringing its total to $1.3M. A rerelease of the Will Ferrell holiday favorite Elf proved worthwhile, taking in over $400,000 over the weekend and outshining recent releases like Freaky and The War with Grandpa.
There hasn’t been a new nationwide release since The Croods: A New Age opened this past Thanksgiving. The next big release will come this Christmas, when Wonder Woman 1984 finally hits the big screen. But with Warner Bros.’ recent move to release their films simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, it’s unclear if the new DC sequel will be enough to give U.S. theaters the boost in ticket sales they’re hoping for.
