Amid the coronavirus, a glimmer of hope appears in director Spike Lee, who just dropped short film focusing on his love for New York City. The joint, titled New York New York, was released onto his Instagram page.
The short takes a journey across the five boroughs and its residents, complete with Frank Sinatra’s iconic song “New York New York” playing in the background. It begins with the empty streets of New York, an uncanny sight caused by the coronavirus and social distancing. While these opening images paint an ominous- even bleak- image of city life, Lee then brings his focus back to the people. He portrays the citizens shouting and holding signs, thanking essential workers for all their hard work.
In his post, Lee stated, “My Short Film-NEW YORK NEW YORK Is A Love Letter To It’s People Plain And Simple. Special Love Shout To Ms. TINA SINATRA,SONY/ATV,KERWIN DEVONISH (Camera),ADAM GOODE (Editor),TIM STACKER And KODAK For The Super 8 Film And Cameras.”
Lee shot the film on a Super 8 film camera, supplied by Kodak. He was also given special permission to use “New York, New York” from Tina Sinatra, the late singer’s daughter. The film seeks to highlight an amazing city and its peoples, who are still contributing selflessly in the middle of a global pandemic.
