‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ continues to do amazingly well in movie theater ticket sales and remains number one in the box office for three consecutive weeks. Unexpectedly, ‘King’s Man‘ beats ‘Matrix Resurrections’ and ‘Sing 2‘ has had a very satisfactory start to the new year.
The New Year is starting off great for Marvel and Sony as Tom Holland’s third solo installment as “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” continues to do extraordinarily well in cinemas. The web-slinging superhero has now gone past $600 million domestically and has thus become the 10th biggest grossing film in domestic box office history. Globally, the teenage arachnid superhero we all have come to love has truly outdone himself and grossed over $1 billion. This past weekend it generated another $78.3 million internationally, making it the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time with $1.37 million, passing up Black Panther ($1.35million). A pandemic era record, as no film has even come close to these numbers since Avengers: Endgame in early 2019.
Illumination Entertainment, Universal Pictures’ animation studio, had good reasons to celebrate the holidays like a true music star. Sing 2 grossed over $89.8 million domestically in the two weeks it has been out in theaters. The zoologist, family-friendly, pop-star extravaganza has generated a whopping $144.6 million globally when added to the international income. Not bad for a singing Koala, an extroverted piglet, a friendly hedgehog, and a pop-star gorilla.
Last but not least, King’s Man and American Underdog were box office surprises as they went past predictions and even beat the fourth episode of the iconic sci-fi franchise The Matrix. King’s Men with Ralph Fiennes, produced by 20th Century and Disney, came in third this weekend $4.5 million, and globally $47.8 million. American Underdog, a biopic about NFL quarterback Kurt Warner produced by Lionsgate, has made in the nine days it has been out a total of $15 million in the US.
Matrix Resurrections, a film that was much anticipated by fans of the old-school science-fiction genre, has had a somewhat disappointing domestic result with $30 million in two weeks, most likely due to its simultaneous release in cinemas and on HBO Max. Internationally though, the film has done reasonably well with $75.1 million, thanks to its exclusive release in movie theaters.
Spider-Man: No Way Home may finally get some real competition in January as scary movie classic Scream will be coming out as well as Marvel’s dark anti-hero Morbius. But for the time being, the fan-favorite wall-crawler is enjoying its reign on top of the box office.
