Deadline reports that Sony pushed back the release date for Marvel’s Morbius, which stars Academy Award winner Jared Leto. The title was previously scheduled to open in theaters on January 28, but will now premiere on April 1.
One factor that pushed the decision was the huge and continuing success with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which established itself as the highest-grossing film of 2021. It has thus far grossed upwards of $1.37 billion worldwide and continues to provide big business on screens previously held for the Morbius debut.
Morbius will now open against Focus Features’ horror drama You Won’t Be Alone, starring Noomi Rapace and Alice Englert. Other titles include Universal’s Jo Koy comedy Easter Sunday (Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, Tiffany Haddish, Lou Diamond Phillips) and STX Entertainment’s thriller The Contractor, starring Chris Pine.
Daniel Espinosa’s Marvel pic portrays Leto as the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble, ailing from a rare blood disorder and determined to save others from suffering the same fate. What at first seems like a radical success soon unleashes the darkness that now exists inside him. Will good triumph evil, or will Morbius succumb to his new urges?
Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson round out the cast. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless adapted the screenplay based on Marvel Comics.
