According to Variety, it appears that the Final Destination franchise will live again, thanks to the Spider-Man: No Way Home director, Jon Watts.
In his latest venture with No Way Home, Watts grossed in $1.5 billion. Off this successful beat, he has boarded Final Destination 6 as a producer alongside New Line Cinema. Watt’s wife and partner, Diane McGunigle, is also producing, along with Final Destination longtime producers, Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.
The screenplay will be written by Lori Evans Taylor (Wicked Wicked Games) and Guy Busick (the new Scream) based on a treatment by Watts. The film is set to debut on HBO Max.
“Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of ‘Final Destination’ from the very beginning,” Watts said in a statement. “So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.”
Final Destination was easily one of the most durable horror series of the 2000s, making five installments from 2000 to 2011. In each film, a group of young, attractive people escape death in the first act and then find themselves succumbing to that death over the course of the movie in a series of horrible and increasingly elaborate accidents. The films brought in $657 million worldwide to date.
Watts is only set to produce the sixth installment of the franchise. His next directing gig will most likely be the Fantastic Four reboot from the Marvel Studios superhero franchise, which remains undated.
