Sony announced Wednesday that the sequel to the universally loved Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been delayed from October 7, 2022, to June 2, 2023. The announcement also noted that the title has dropped the ‘Part One’ but will still be the first part of two. The second part has also officially been given the release date of March 29, 2024.
Comicbook.com spoke with Chris Miller, one of the film’s co-writers, who said: “This is a situation where the movie was so ambitious, it was trying to do so many groundbreaking things in its visual style, in its storytelling style, in its cinematic style. Everything about it … The sound mix was probably going to be groundbreaking, so it required a lot of work. Every version of these movies is a collaboration of hundreds of filmmakers working together, and in the best versions, people are contributing their creative ideas, and the people, the directors, and the producers are the ones that get to decide which of the things fit the road that you’re going down.”
While the delay is disappointing, it seems that the creators are confident about giving the film more time to cook. This might also make for a shorter amount of time between parts.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson with a script penned by Miller, Phil Lord, and David Callaham. The film will star Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld again, along with possible other returners.
