Sony Pictures Classics swooped distribution rights for Sundance’s darling The Persian Version. The film cleaned up at Park City, winning the Audience Award and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition.
This is the second Sundance picture Sony Pictures Classics nabbed after picking up A Little Prayer last month. SPC is partnering with Studio 6 for North American distribution. Sony Pictures Releasing International will release the movie worldwide.
The Persian Version centers on an Iranian-American family living in New York and their struggles to acclimate to American society. The film centers on Leila, played by Layla Mohammadi, a queer filmmaker who reconnects with her family after her father’s heart transplant. It is director Maryam Keshavarz’s third feature and second to premiere at Sundance after her debut Circumstance did so in 2011.
In a statement to the press, Sony Pictures Classics representatives wrote, “Maryam Keshavarz’s The Persian Version is an eloquent film about family and freedom while at the same time grand entertainment. We are excited to bring the movie to audiences everywhere and to be working again with our colleagues at Stage 6 Films.”
Keshavarz released her statement saying, “after two-plus years of watching everything at home and in our PJs, I am excited to bring The Persian Version to theaters where we can experience the joy and humor of this big rowdy immigrant American family together in a communal setting. Having grown up watching and loving SPC films, I’m stoked to partner with them to reach the widest possible audience for this crazy film.”
