The Greta Gerwig-led (Frances Ha) comedy Maggie’s Plan premiered this month at the Toronto Film Festival to positive reviews and has since been picked up for domestic and some international distribution by Sony Pictures Classics, according to Variety.
The film centers on a young woman living in Brooklyn (the residence of most Gerwig characters) who makes a plan to have a baby via sperm donation. This decision is derailed when she begins an affair with a married college professor (Ethan Hawke, Boyhood) and manages to unhinge his relationship with his brilliant wife (Julianne Moore, Still Alice).
Sony Pictures Classics’ distribution library typically consists of revered indie films including last year’s Still Alice which earned Moore Best Actress Oscar, as well as the Best Foreign Language nominee Leviathan. This year they have already released Testament of Youth and The Diary of Teenage Girl and will soon be releasing the Dan Rather biopic Truth and the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light, among others. Although the company is more known for picking up dramas, they also patron several drama-based comedies such as Grandma (now playing) and Woody Allen‘s filmography which includes this year’s Irrational Man. The fact that Maggie’s Plan boasts of performances from an Oscar winner and nominee (Hawke), as well as a Golden Globe nominee (Gerwig), this particular comedy will likely fit right into the mix.
Maggie‘s Plan was directed by Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee) and co-written by Miller and Karen Rinaldi. The film is headed to the New York Film Festival before it hits theaters. A wide release has not yet been set.
