Sony Acquires ‘Driftless Area’ with Zooey Deschanel and Anton Yelchin

Driftless Area, the romantic drama-comedy starring Zooey Deschanel (Rock the Kasbah) and Anton Yelchin (Green Room), has been acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, according to Variety.

Based on Tom Drury’s 2006 novel of the same name and adapted for the screen by Drury and director Zachary Sluser in his feature film debut, the story follows small-town eccentrics in the Midwest, including a romance between bartender Pierre Hunter (Yelchin) and mysterious Stella Rosmarin (Deschanel). The romance pulls Hunter front and center into a revenge drama as he faces down a volatile criinal played by John Hawkes (Everest). Rounding out the cast are Alia Shaukat (who co-starred with Yelchin in Green Room), Aubrey Plaza (Addicted to Fresno), Frank Langella (Robot & Frank) and Ciarán Hinds (Hitman: Agent 47).

Producers are Unified Pictures’ Keith Kjarval and Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert in association with CW Media Finance.

The feature had its premiere earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival.
