It’s hard to believe it, but it has almost been 20 years since Dreamworks released their hit animated movie Shrek. The original Shrek movie came out on May 18, 2001, and while when it was first released it received positive reviews, earned a lot of money at the box office, and won several awards including the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the movie has gone on to gain a rather large and very strange following.
Over the past 20 years Shrek has become a beloved meme online. The Shrek franchise is considered the bizarre darling of the internet, and it is loved all over the web both ironically and un-ironically.
Now in honor of it’s Shrek-tastic legacy Fathom Events is allowing fans to return to the swamp. This coming April Fathom Events will be re-releasing the first Shrek movie directly into theaters. Movie Web reports that tickets for the screenings are already now on sale. Also on May 11th Shrek will also be getting a Shrek 20th Anniversary Edition on home media platforms.
Shrek is a Dreamwork’s parody of Disney’s fairytale movies, and it is actually based on a book by William Steig. The plot follows an ogre named Shrek (Mike Myers), whose peaceful life is interrupted when the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) forces all the fairytale creatures in the land onto Shrek’s swamp. Shrek and a donkey named Donkey (Eddie Murphy) are then forced to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a Dragon (Frank Welker) in order to get Shrek’s swamp back.
