See the First Explosive Red Band Trailer for James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

There’s been plenty of news from DC and Warner Brothers this week about upcoming new content, though one of the most highly anticipated upcoming films may be Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn‘s new, star-studded take on The Suicide Squad. The first trailer for the film has dropped today, finally giving fans a glimpse, and a blood-filled one at that, of the colorful new set of anti-heroes that make up the film’s ensemble.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag are all returning faces to the franchise, and are joined by plenty of new faces including Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Michael Rooker as Savant, John Cena as Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian as Polka- Dot Man, and Pete Davidson as Blackguard.

This trailer shows the team Task Force X, led by Flag and organized and managed by Waller, concocting an elaborate plan to rescue Harley Quinn, only to find her to have rescued herself. We then see Waller recruit Blackguard and Savant from prison, reminding them that cooperation will earn them 10 years off their sentence, adding them to the growing Suicide Squad lineup. Jai Courtney’s Boomerang makes an appearance, and Nathan Fillion‘s T.D.K. King Shark, voiced by Sylvester Stallone, is introduced by way of us seeing him eat a man whole, then later tearing a man in half lengthwise (it is a red-band trailer, after all).

The group interrogates The Thinker, played by Peter Capaldi, recruiting him to help in their fight against big baddie Starro, a giant starfish-esque alien creature. One of Waller’s men sees the massive monster, calling it a kaiju. Hard cut to Idris Elba facing it in a quick nod to Pacific Rim, showing that the film will likely take a self-aware approach similar to what fans have loved in Deadpool.

The Suicide Squad will be released on August 6, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max. The full trailer and new posters can be viewed below:
