See Elle Fanning as a Transgender Teen in the ‘About Ray’ Trailer

About Ray– formerly known as Three Generations— follows the eponymous Ray (Elle Fanning, Maleficent), a teen in the midst of a transition from female to male as he struggles to gain the support of his family on top of the outside world.

His immediate family consists of his lesbian grandmother, played by Susan Sarandon (Lorenzo’s Oil), who questions why he doesn’t just take her same-sex path, and his mother, played by Naomi Watts (Birdman), who is the first to accept and rally behind Ray in his transition, saying “There is no Ramona anymore, it’s just Ray.” Ray’s biggest challenge will be to get the approval of his estranged father (Tate Donovan, TV’s The OC) whose signature is required to go ahead with the necessary medical procedures.

English born director Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day) helmed this film working from her own co-created story and a script written by Nikole Beckwith (Stockholm, Pennsyvania, 2015).

The trailer focuses on the prevalent struggles transgender persons face each day which have been thankfully making their way to the forefront of public and media discussion.

About Ray will be released next month in theaters on September 18th.
