The Guillermo del Toro-produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has surpassed Dora and the Lost City of Gold in Thursday night’s preview revenue. Although Scary Stories took in nice $2.3 million to Dora’s $1.3 million, this isn’t necessarily an indication of where the box office revenue will end up after the weekend showings. Both are expected to hit around $15 million and $19 million in what, according to Variety, “should be one of the summer’s closest races” of third and fourth place behind Hobbes and Shaw and The Lion King’s second-weekend runs, both of which are expected to take in more than $20 million each.
Scary Stories takes place in the 1960s and follows a group of kids who discover an old book written by a troubled young girl from the 1800s, resulting in all its story monsters escaping and causing havoc. They soon find out that the stories in the book have counterparts in their reality. The PG-13 Lionsgate film, directed by André Øvredal and based on a screenplay by Dan and Kevin Hageman, currently has a Certified Fresh rating of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dora and The Lost City of Gold, directed by James Bobin, stars Isabella Moner as Dora in the famous cartoon character’s big-screen debut, albeit live-action one. Eva Longoria and Michael Peña co-star as her parents who go missing, leading Dora to go on an adventure with her trusty sidekick Boots, voiced by Danny Trejo, to find lost Inca civilization. Along the way she runs into familiar faces from the cartoon like nemesis Swiper the Fox, voiced by Benicio del Toro. Paramount’s Dora currently has a mostly positive rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
