No stranger to misanthropy, director Miguel Arteta and writer Mike White (both of whom previously collaborated on Chuck and Buck and The Good Girl) introduce a new blend of squirmy-ness with their latest indie, Beatriz at Dinner. The first trailer has arrived and showcases a particularly tense dinner party where battle lines are drawn – politically, socially, economically, and likely much more – by Salma Hayek and John Lithgow.
A hit at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere, the fiery and confrontational dark comedy sparked enthusiastic chatter from critics and filmgoers for its raw and combative topicality. Chloë Sevigny (Love and Friendship), Connie Britton (American Ultra), Transparent alums Jay Duplass and Amy Landecker and David Warshofsky (Wilson) co-star.
In the film, “Beatriz (Salma Hayek), an immigrant from a poor town in Mexico, has drawn on her innate kindness to build a career as a health practitioner in Los Angeles. Doug Strutt (John Lithgow) is a cutthroat, self-satisfied billionaire. When these two opposites meet at a dinner party, their worlds collide and neither will ever be the same.”
