Rumors have started circulating about the lead of Warner Bros.’ upcoming The Matrix movie. Golden Globe nominee Ariana Grande is apparently being considered to star in the film. The Grammy-winning pop star reported previously that she plans to focus her talents on acting over the next several years.
In April 2024, Warner Bros. confirmed Drew Goddard was set to write and direct the new Matrix franchise film. The Cabin in the Woods co-writer and director received an Oscar nomination in 2016 for best screenplay for his work on The Martian. Concerning his upcoming project, Goddard commented: “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
Originally released over 25 years ago, The Matrix grossed $463,517,383 worldwide and won four Oscars. Writer-director siblings Lilly and Lana Wachowski received widespread acclaim for the imaginative sci-fi about a computer hacker who enters an alternate world. Lana Wachowski will serve as executive producer of the upcoming film. Goddard will also produce with partner Sarah Esberg.
No information has been released about whether original cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith will return. However, rumors about Will Smith’s potential involvement were debunked after Smith posted a Matrix-related Instagram on January 6. It is still not clear what Smith was teasing.
