Rumors Circulate Surrounding Florence Welch as ‘Star Wars’ Cast Member

Florence Welch at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards

Rumors have been circulating that British singer Florence Welch of ‘Florence and the Machine’ is being considered for a role in the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed Star Wars film. The film is set to be released in 2015 and will be a continuation of the saga originally created by George Lucas. The 26 year-old singer may seem like a surprising casting choice, but the film is supposedly looking to assemble an “unexpected” cast, perhaps mirroring the intent behind the original Star Wars to cast relative unknowns. There have also been rumors that some of that original cast, such as Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher, will return for this latest Star Wars.

Welch, who recently appeared on the 2013 The Great Gatsby soundtrack, first emerged into the public eye with the release of her band’s first album, Lungs, in 2009 and their sophomore album Ceremonials in 2011, both of which debuted highly within the UK and U.S. Welch’s song ‘Heavy in Your Arms’ played during the ending credits of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and her band has been nominated for Grammy Awards and has won numerous Brit Awards.

Welch has already established herself as a singer and public figure, she was ranked the 50th most influential person in Time’s 2011 poll, and we may soon witness the singer-songwriter prove herself as an actor as well. Welch is also rumored to be a cast member of Terrence Malick’s latest, untitled project which boasts actors such as Christian Bale, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett.
