Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe Team Up in Upcoming Film ‘The Lighthouse’

The first trailer for the upcoming A24 project The Lighthouse has just been released. In the trailer, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe play colleagues trying to master the sea waters and keep their lighthouse in order, all the while the haunting building slowly erodes away time to the point where Dafoe’s character asks how long they’ve been there. The stunning black and white visuals and eerie themes feel reminiscent of early horror films like F.W. Murnau’s 1922 vampire horror Nosferatu.

The film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in May to a standing ovation, with much of the praise being given to Pattinson and Dafoe’s “sledgehammer” performances. The film currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Robert Eggers, director of the critically acclaimed thriller The Witch, directed The Lighthouse and co-wrote it along with his brother, Max Eggers. Lady Bird, Midsommar, and The Witch distributor A24 also produced and will distribute The Lighthouse.

Recently, it was announced that Pattinson will take on the role of Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming 2021 Batman film. In 2020, Dafoe will star in the highly anticipated Wes Anderson film The French Dispatch, along with Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, and Timothée Chalamet. The Lighthouse will screen a second time in September at the Toronto International Film Festival before being released in theaters on October 18th.
