Disney has announced that the theatrical release for Black Widow, originally set for May 1st, 2020, is being pushed back by the coronavirus crisis.
Black Widow will see Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as the titular ex-Russian spy turned Avenger from Marvel Comics. Johansson has been a feature player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since her first appearance in the role in Iron Man 2 (2010), yet the character of Natasha Romanoff has not had a solo or origin film of her own like many of her male co-stars (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth), despite frequent requests from fans. Finally, in 2019, development for Black Widow was announced at San Diego Comic Con by producer Kevin Feige and director Cate Shortland.
The movie is set to take place after Captain America: Civil War (2016), and has been described as a spy thriller. In addition to Johansson, the film also starts Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O.T. Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz. Also returning to their MCU roles is Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) and William Hurt as U.S. Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross. The screenwriter for the project is Eric Pearson, who previously wrote the screenplay for the wildly successful Thor: Ragnarok.
Along with Black Widow, Disney also has pushed back the releases of Mulan, The New Mutants, and Antlers.
